TOUR OF ROMAN OBELISKS | 3 hrs tour

From Piazza del Popolo to Piazza Navona

You will experience an exciting tour through history and legends about these monoliths consecrated to the Sun God. Your expert guide will tell you everything about obelisk’s provenience: the majority of them were transported from Egypt to Rome during the Roman empire, while others were made with the same granite used by the Egyptians. In Egypt, obelisks celebrated the Pharaoh’s kingship and his immortality in Rome they were revisited as symbols of power and victory.
The itinerary will start from Piazza del Popolo with its Flaminio obelisk, then we will look at the obelisk of the Spanish Steps, which is situated right on the top of the famous staircase. The next stop will be at Piazza Montecitorio, where the obelisk of the Pharaoh Psammetico II rises up. Our tour will end with a visit at Rome’s most beautiful obelisk, which is the one that crowns Piazza Navona, Fountain of the Four Rivers, made by Bernini, decorated by false Egyptian hieroglyphics, wrongly copied by roman gouges. At the end of the tour we will return to the hotel (only to hotels in the city center).

We are talking about the “Four Altars of Science” which led the initiates of the “Church of Illumination”: Castel Sant’Angelo (Castle of the Holy Angel). The tour will start from the baroque Santa Maria della Vittoria church (that hosts Bernini’s sculptural group “Ecstasy of Saint Teresa”), then we will move first to Barberini Square and then to Piazza del Popolo. CATACOMBS OF PRISCILLA | 2 hrs tour

Underground galleries

Walk with our expert guides through underground galleries, in order to see real proofs of life, art and faith of the Christian community of the first centuries. The Catacombs of Priscilla are well known from all the ancient topographic and liturgical sources. Located on Via Salaria, the entrance is from the cloister of the ancient convent of Benedictine Sisters of Priscilla. Due to the great number of martyrs buried within, it was called “regina catacumbarum” – the queen of the catacombs.
Originally dug out between the 2nd and the 5th century AD, they develop as a series of underground burial chambers, like the “arenarium” or sand-quarry, the “cryptoporticus”, and the funerary hypogeum of the Acilii Glabrioni family. This was the family of the noblewoman named Priscilla, who maybe donated the field where our catacomb was dug. This is the probable reason why this cemetery has always been named after her since the 4th century. After six centuries of abandon, the Catacombs of Priscilla were rediscovered in the 15th century and they still hold an archaeological treasure of more than 1700 years.

COPPEDÈ DISTRICT | 1.5 hr tour

Art Nouveau district

You will experience an exciting tour through the district of Coppedè. Forget the secret garden, this is the secret neighbourhood of Rome. Tucked behind the main streets of Quartiere Trieste, between piazza Buenos Aires and via Tagliamento, is the bizarre and elaborate district of Coppedè. You will enter under a big arch on Via Tagliamento on the corner with Via Dora.
The itinerary will start from Piazza Mincio, heart of the district. Coppedè, brainchild of architect Gino Coppedè (built 1913-1927), is a jumble of historic styles such as Art Nouveau, Medieval, Baroque and ancient Greek all whipped together in a dramatic frenzy. Nature is the principal inspiration; daring and eccentric curved lines seek freedom from tradition, coexisting with modern sensuous ironwork. Coppedè is Rome’s answer to the Gaudì structures of Barcelona.

JEWISH QUARTER | 2 hrs tour

Ghetto and Church of San Nicola in Carcere

Our itinerary is thought to rediscover two of the most ancient commercial Fora of the city: the Forum Boarium and its almost intact Temples of Hercules and of Portunus from the Republican era, and the Forum Holitorium with the ruins of the three Republican Temples incorporated into the church of San Nicola in Carcere, of which basements are a very open window on the archaic Rome. We will continue our walk in the Ghetto: from the Synagogue to the Cinque Scole, from the Porticus Octaviae to the turtles in Mattei Square, a journey in the history and the memory, to find out curious facts and legends about Rome’s ancient Jewish quarter.

SUBURRA EXPERIENCE | 4/5.5 hrs tour

Monti district

An evening stroll through Rome’s most infamous neighbourhood, intrigue and mystery went hand in hand with its colourful residents. The supposed birthplace of Julius Caesar explore this refreshingly anonymous area still uncontaminated from tourism and all the best eateries both traditional and modern. A favourite with the locals, Monti is Rome’s best kept secret. Full of artisans honing their craft this is a great spot for a bit of shopping too. From old standing wine bars to up and coming street food spots Monti is a great place to experience modern Italian classics with a twist. What better way to finish up the evening than to walk through the Forums of ancient Rome, now empty of tourists to enjoy a truly Roman evening.
If you just can’t get enough history add onto this tour an interactive digital experience where the stories of Julius Caesar and Augustus will live again through the use of light and video. This reconstruction of the forums is a great way to learn about some of the most interesting characters in the history of Rome. It is often hard to picture Rome as it must have been when all we see are ruins, this digital reconstruction will allow you to go back in time to when the forums were bustling with people carrying out their daily life. Optional addition of Forums at night with the lightshow.
