Itineraries to discover: Piazza di Spagna
Without a doubt one of the most famous squares in the world, it owes its name to the marvellous building that houses the Embassy of Spain to the Holy See, dating back to 1647. In front of it, stands the contour of the Column of the Immaculate Conception, erected in 1857.
The architect Luigi Poletti designed the monument commissioned by Pope Pius IX. The inauguration took place on December 8th, thanks to the work of over 200 firemen. For this reason, each year since 1923, the firemen of Rome pay homage to the “Madonna of the Column” placing a wreath of flowers.
In the centre of the square is one of the most characteristic fountains of the city. Carved by Pietro Bernini and his son Gian Lorenzo, it is known as the Fontana della Barcaccia. In fact, it represents a small boat (probably one of those used to transport wine barrels on the Tiber) in imminent danger of sinking: the Virgin Acqueduct that feeds it seems to have completely invaded the hull already semi-submerged. However, with this unusual choice, the artisans resolved the problem linked in that particular point to the low pressure of the aqueduct. An eventual pedestal would have made the arrival of water impossible!
Popular tradition has it that the object was expressly suggested by Pope Urban VIII, impressed by a boat that had run aground on the slopes of the hill due to a flood of the Tiber.
Situated on both sides of the fountain are, on the one hand Via dei Condotti, with its straight layout on which the renowned luxury boutiques open, on the other, the particular pincer ramps of the Trinità dei Monti stairway, designed – with the concave and convex style of the walls – by the workshop of Gian Lorenzo Bernini.
To reach the church of the Santissima Trinità dei Monti, there is also another road. Decidedly more peaceful but equally suggestive. From Piazza Mignanelli, overlooked as in a small courtyard by the splendid Mignanelli palace (designed by Andrea Busiri Vici) and that of the Sacra Congregazione di Propaganda Fide (on which the eternal rivals Gian Lorenzo Bernini and Francesco Borromini worked), a ramp hidden between the palaces leads to the foot of the Sallustian obelisk. Carved in Roman times in imitation of the Egyptian obelisks, it decorated the Horti Sallustiani, the wonderful gardens built by the historian Gaius Sallustio Crispo in a vast area extended from the Pincio to the Quirinale.
